Haskel offers a range of air operated liquid pumps which are extensively used for many applications in the machine tool industry. Major advantages such as problem-free intermittent operation and the ability to hold high pressures without consuming energy are coupled with compact size. These critical requirements have lead design engineers to select these pumps to solve their problems. Our technical sales support team are ready to help size the Haskel pump to meet your requirement. Some typical applications are show on overleaf.

Key Featuresback to top

  • Ability to stall at any predetermined pressure and hold this fixed pressure indefinitely without consuming power or generating heat
  • No heat, flame or spark risk
  • Infinitely variable cycling speed and output
  • Easy to apply automatic controls
  • No limit or adverse effect to continuous stop-start applications
  • Reliable, easy to maintain, compact and robust
  • Smaller reservoir required due to no heat generation from air driven pump

Typical Applicationsback to top

Vertical Milling and Boring Machine Counter Balances

These machines are fitted with counter weights to position and counter balance the machine head. One of the most effective counter balance systems is to use an air driven hydraulic pump and accumulator. The system is automatic with the pump starting to cycle if there is a pressure drop in the accumulator. This allows the general system pressure to to be run from the main electro-hydraulic pump system and the higher pressure hydraulics required by the counter balance to be provided by the compact air driven pump.

Roller Tensioning

The ease with which the Haskel pump outlet can be adjusted ensures precise roller tension and squeeze pressure.

Hydraulic Actuation of Cylinders

The hydraulic cylinder on a wide range of presses such as filter, rubber curing, metal forming, plastic moulding, etc. requires a hydraulic power pack to advance and hold the pressure stroke. A Haskel air driven pump is ideal for stroking the cylinder and maintaining the required load indefinitely without consuming power.

Mechanical Press Safety Overload

To prevent overload damage to both press and die sets a safety feature is to incorporate an oil-filled cylinder into the lower die housing. The pressure in the cylinder is maintained at slightly over the press tonnage rating by a Haskel pump. Should an overload problem occur, the pressure in the cylinder is relieved through a safety valve. The pump will maintain the pressure indefinitely without consuming power and will only cycle again if if a pressure drop has occurred in the cylinder.

High Performance Drilling (Gun Drilling)

Drills for deep hole drilling have oil coolant pumped through a centre hole which lubricates and cools the cutting tip as well as flushing the chips out via the flutes of the drill. Haskel air driven liquid pumps are ideal for pumping the lubricant and are simple and easily installed in drilling machines.

Hydraulic Friction Clutch Brake

On a mechanical press the flywheel is held by a spring-loaded brake until a press stroke is initiated. The hydraulic pressure from the control system overcomes the spring pressure to release the brake and engage the clutch. A Haskel air driven pump is used to release the brake and in the event of any loss of air supply, the circuit is designed to fail safe at which point the brake will be applied.

Grinding Wheel Spraying

To increase grinding wheel life, a Haskel pump can spray grinding wheel coolant onto the wheel through a nozzle at high pressure.

Work Holding - Power Clamping

Top and bottom die plates are generally secured in a press by hydro-mechanical clamps located in "Tee" slots on the side and bed plate. Clamping is achieved by heavy springs closing the clamps with a hydraulic pump opening them, or by using a pump to close the clamps through an intrinsically safe circuit. Haskel pumps are widely used for this application because once the pump has cycled to develop the closing pressure, it will maintain the pressure indefinitely without further power consumption.
